A trigger point is a hypersensitive nodule in a taut band of muscle. Many people refer to them as “knots”. When pressed upon, it can be extremely painful. Because the nodule often crosses a neuromuscular junction, the pain is often accompanied by a referring pain in a predictable pattern, along the nerve.
Myofascial trigger points can be found in any muscle, anywhere in the body. An active, or irritated, trigger point can cause extreme pain in the muscle itself, pain in other muscles that the trigger point is referring to, and loss of mobility in the affected area. Trigger point therapy is when trigger points are deactivated, or “released”. For this deactivation, a practitioner will press onto the nodule for a few seconds up to a few minutes until the referring pain has faded, and the nodule becomes less sensitive.
